We recently got invited to a mock lunch service at a new restaurant in North Dallas. It’s called Maximo : Cocina Mexicana & Margarita Lounge. We were served a three-course meal and everything was really awesome. The menu is a mix of gourmet Tex-Mex and more traditional Mexican dishes, with influences from four regions of Mexico: Puebla, Yucatan, Veracruz and Oaxaca. My favorite part was the Guacamolero, who whipped up a fresh batch of the best guacamole, right at our table. Good chips. Good salsa. The entrées were amazing. I had a shrimp skewer, the Alambre de Camarón con Salsa de Tepache—which, unfortunately for everyone else, I couldn’t stop saying over and over again. We’re definitely going back to try some of their 30 some-odd tequilas. Hopefully we’ll live to write about that.

Art Prostitute was founded in Denton in 2003 and quickly gained global recognition as being an outstanding design/art publication featuring some the most talented and relevent creative minds out there. Since then they’ve moved their gallery to Deep Ellum into the space shown above.

The show openings here are always a blast—they had free Shiner on tap at the last one I went to, not to mention a bunch of jaw-dropping work. If you think most “art galleries” are stuffy and pretentious, then this will be a breath of fresh air. And it’s because of the founders, Brian Gibb and Mark Searcy. They do a great job of finding artists/designers who live and breathe creativity—people who truly depend on creativity for their survival. At least this is the vibe that I got out of it. You won’t be dissapointed. They also have a nice little collection of art books and lots of other cool stuff for sale. Here’s a map.
Thanks to Justin Childress and Christina Childress for the photography.

If you ever get the urge to buy a Bonsai tree, this is the place to go.

They’ve got a lot of other kinds of plants, too. Get directions here.

I usually get buyer’s remorse after buying anything new. Especially new books. It seems like such a waste on something that I will be done with in a week or two and then probably never look at again. That’s why Paperbacks Plus kicks ass. You can set up an account and then just trade in your old books (or CDs, DVDs, LPs, cassettes, 8-tracks, video tapes, comic books, and magazines) for other old books or just build up your store credit (although some cash is required for a portion of the transaction). And the store isn’t huge so it won’t take you long to find what you’re looking for. It’s really inexpensive, too. I bought two books there yesterday and the total was under $5. It’s in East Dallas right off of Skillman. Click here for directions.

We decided to make a desktop background of a photo from Paperbacks Plus. Download them here:

So, you probably won’t really appreciate this place very much if you’re already on the Netflix train, but if you like to go to the movie store and maybe talk to a human being every once-in-a-while, then Premier Video is going to blow your mind. It’s perfect to go without any idea of what you’re looking and then just browse around and find something that looks cool, or ask the staff, they’re really happy to suggest something.

Like Blockbuster, Premier Video has all the latest hit films (they usually only have a few copies, though), but they also have everything (and more) that Blockbuster would never carry. Foreign films are categorized by country and also by filmaker, which makes it easy to find new films by a good director. I usually check out the documentary section, but they also have an icredible TV dvd collection, and usually get the new ones in right after they are released. And if you really want to dork out, like I have been known to do a lot, they have tons of PBS stuff. Plus, if you can’t find what you are looking for, they’ll send off for it and then call you when it gets in. I haven’t done the whole internet movie renting thing yet, so I’m sure this sounds super archaic to you to waste your time driving to an actual store, but this place is a true mom & pop shop that I don’t want to see die. Plus, I need a reason to get out of the house every once in while.
